NCVC has announced the continuation of its existing projects on the Kingdom's coasts with the planting of 13 million mangrove seedlings. NCVC has completed several projects planting millions of seedlings and is currently implementing additional projects, including in areas such as Jazan with 5.5 million seedlings, Makkah with 2.4 million, Madinah with 2 million, Tabuk with 1.5 million, Aseer with 1 million, and the Eastern Region with 500,000 seedlings. These efforts are in line with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, contributing to the planting of millions of mangrove trees that will help enhance and flourish mangrove forests.
In collaboration with partners, NCVC aims to plant 100 million mangrove trees along the coasts of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf in the coming years. It is currently working to increase the green area and combat desertification in the coastal environment by planting one million mangrove trees at various sites.
Previously, NCVC launched projects over a year ago to plant 700,000 mangrove seedlings (200,000 on Ras Abu Ali Island in Al Jubail Governorate and 500,000 in Al Wajh Governorate), along with fencing and care to protect the seedlings from algae and marine plants, and the sites from grazing and encroachment. Other activities included nursery preparation, collecting mature and healthy seeds, purifying them, and then sowing them in the nursery.
The mangrove planting projects are part of a series of contracts that NCVC has established and continues to enhance the Kingdom's coasts with mangrove forests and their development through several cultivation projects. These forests are vital for the coastal environment and vegetation cover and are a primary source of biodiversity. They also play a significant role in combating climate change in the Kingdom.
NCVC is dedicated to developing, protecting, preserving, and rehabilitating degraded vegetation sites, restoring biodiversity in natural environments, and overseeing the management of rangelands, forests, and national parks for investment, aiming to achieve sustainable development and improve the quality of life, in line with the objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative.
